Farmingdale, NY
(Apr. 17, 2012) – Despite two rousing wins at first and second singles Tuesday night at Farmingdale State, Purchase dropped a Skyline Conference matchup against the host Rams, 6-3.
Still well in the playoff hunt, the Panthers lost two of the three doubles matches, which set the tone the early for FSC. Justin Vijungco and Christian Bormann earned a hard-fought 9-7 victory at No. 1 doubles for FSC, while Joseph Falcetta and Jimmy Lopez teamed for an 8-5 win at No. 3 for the Rams.
Purchase's No. 2 tandem of
Roger King* (JR/Yonkers, NY) and
Maxim Luiggi* (SR/Paris, France) earned a hard-fought 9-7 victory of their own to cut the deficit to one, but FSC bounced back and captured four of the six singles matches to earn the victory.
In singles,
Brenden Keeling (JR/Ontario, Canada) and
Jeremyah Schur (FR/Forest Hills, NY) were the two bright spots for the Panthers. Keeling, the reigning Skyline Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, topped Vijungco 1-6, 6-4, 10-7. Schur, a major candidate for Skyline Rookie of the Year, joined Keeling in the win column. And like Keeling, also continued his hot spring. Schur won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
The Rams improved to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
The Panthers, now fighting for the fourth and final playoff spot, dropped to 7-4 overall and 2-3 in the league. Purchase will travel to Sage Wednesday for its final conference match of the season.
