Purchase, NY
(Apr. 21, 2012) – A clean sweep of doubles paved the way for a 7-2 Purchase victory Saturday in the team's final regular season match before the Skyline Conference Tournament.
The Panthers wrap up 9-4 on the season after defeating CUNY rival John Jay at home today. Purchase is the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will face No. 1 NYU-POLY next Thursday in Flushing Meadows.
As for Saturday, the Panthers started strong against a team of five players, taking No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. The Bloodhounds defaulted at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
In what served a nice tune-up for the team,
Brenden Keeling (JR/Ontario, Canada) and
Jeremyah Schur (FR/Forest Hills, NY) earned an 8-3 win at No. 1.
Maxim Luiggi* (SR/Paris, France) and
Roger King* (JR/Yonkers, NY) continued the trend at No. 2 doubles in an 8-3 margin.
The highlight for John Jay came at first singles as Erkut Cakmak defeated Keeling 7-5, 6-1 in an upset.
However, Schur, Luiggi and
Ben Ekis (SR/Rochester, NY) got the team back on track with wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively. John Jay won at fourth singles, but the three Panther wins coupled with the default was more than enough for a 7-2 final.
