(Apr. 28, 2012) – An incredible spring campaign found the Purchase College men's tennis team in the Skyline Conference finals Saturday at Farmingdale State.
Second-seeded FSC would spoil Purchase's first berth in the championship under head coach
Peter Nestel. The Rams topped No. 4 Purchase 5-0. In the process, the Rams captured their second straight Skyline Championship and received the conference's automatic bid to the 2012 Division III Men's Tennis Championship.
Farmingdale State (12-5) swept the doubles matches to take an early 3-0 lead. The No. 1 doubles team of sophomore Christian Bormann and freshman Justin Vijungco won 8-4, followed by the No. 2 doubles team of junior Ryan Musalo and Alex Bessarabov. The third doubles tandem of sophomore Joseph Falcetta and freshman Jimmy Lopez won 8-3.
In singles play, Bessarabov remained unbeaten in the Skyline Tournament with a 6-1, 6-4 victory. Falcetta posted the only other win at No. 5 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 win. All other matches went unfinished as the Rams won the fifth match.
Bessarabov was named the tournament MVP after posting a 4-0 record this weekend.
The Panthers finish their season at 10-5 overall. The spring campaign is one of the best in recent memory. “It was a great spring,” said
head coach Peter Nestel. “I'm extremely proud of the team and we remain very excited about the future with only two seniors graduating. Farmingdale has a great team and we congratulate them on the title. We look forward to competing for the championship again next season.”
