Purchase, NY
(Apr. 5, 2012) – Hard to call Spring Break a timeout for the women's softball team.
The Panthers have soared over the holiday, winning four in a row. After sweeping Sarah Lawrence Tuesday on the road, Purchase returned to action Thursday at home and coasted past visiting York College. The Panthers won the opener 5-1 and then closed out the twin bill sweep in an impressive 11-2, five-inning, run-rule.
Panther ace
Lindsay Froman (SR/Medina, NY) won both games and was clearly one of the stars of the afternoon. She pitched five innings in game two, allowing one earned run, while striking out two. Froman (4-1) followed up a nice effort in game one with another solid outing in game two.
Offensively, the Panthers used two, four-run innings in the first and the fourth to score eight of their 11 runs in the night cap.
Mariel Perez (SR/Queens, NY) had a two RBI triple that highlighted the first inning. Two errors by the visitors would also contribute to Purchase's strong start.
The Panthers added a single run in the second on a perfectly executed bunt by
Christina Sanderson (SO/Schaghticoke, NY), which scored
Abigail Katz (JR/Livingston, NJ). Katz tripled with one out.
York plated a runner on two hits and an error in the third, cutting the score to 5-1, and then added another single run in the top of the fourth before the hosts put the game away in the bottom of the fourth. Purchase collected four runs on two hits and six errors, highlighted by an RBI single by
Alyse LaPadula (SR/New Rochelle, NY).
Christine Leo (SO/Monroe, CT) and Froman each had two hits as the duo accounted for four of the team's eight hits. Perez led the way with two RBI.
In the opener, the Panthers jumped on the board immediately. With two outs, Leo singled and advanced to third on a two-base error by York's left fielder. A wild pitch plated Leo for a quick 1-0 lead.
York answered back with a run of its own in the top of the second. A walk, a single and a fielder's choice put a runner in scoring position for Aleen Abad, who singled home the game-tying run.
But that was all the Cardinals would muster against Froman, who cruised the rest of the way. Froman hurled seven strong innings en route to victory. She allowed five hits, walking one and striking out five.
With Froman starring on the hill, the Panther offense went back to work in the middle innings. Purchase scored two runs in the third, recapturing the lead. Again, a two-out rally spurred the Panthers in the frame. Katz singled. Sanderson followed with a walk. Leo then singled home both runners, once again advancing on an outfielder error. Leo's gapper gave Purchase a 3-1 lead.
In the fifth, the Panthers padded their margin. Katz doubled and advanced to third on another York miscue. Sanderson followed with a perfect squeeze. The bunt scored Katz. The Panthers added a single run in the sixth for the final score.
York fell to 5-9 in the doubleheader. Joviette Frederick had two hits in each of the team games to lead the Cardinals. Meanwhile, LaPadula, Katz and Leo recorded two hits each for the Panthers in game one.
Riding a four-game win streak, Purchase will now wait until Apr. 14 before resuming its schedule. The Panthers will travel to Old Westbury on that date for a Skyline Conference doubleheader with the rival SUNY Panthers.
