(Feb. 3, 2013) – Purchase men's volleyball celebrated Super Bowl Sunday with a split of a conference tri-match at powerhouse Ramapo.
The Panthers topped Yeshiva University 3-0 (23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-15) and then dropped a 3-0 final to host Ramapo (25-11, 25-12, 25-12). The Panther victory against YU marked the first win for the men's volleyball team in the
Tom Callahan era.
Ramapo would also upend Kean University on the afternoon, sweeping its action for the day. Ramapo, behind 11 kills from Chris Sidnam, upset the #14 ranked Cougars 3-1 (25-23, 16-25, 25-19, 25-17) at the Bradley Center.
For the Panthers,
Kevon Kareem Bruce (JR/Hayes, Jamaica) and
Taylor Edelmann (SR/Bethel, CT) starred in the win against YU.
Bruce totaled a team-high 12 kills, sharing the match lead with YU's Jared Rechnitz. Edelmann added 10 kills.
Mateo Morel (SR/Bronx, NY) also turned in a nice performance with nine kills. Setter
Alex Billen-Calhoun (SR/ Niskayuna, NY) handed out a team-high 36 assists.
Later, the host Roadrunners swept Purchase to improve to 2-4 overall and 2-0 in the Skyline Conference.
Following a tough opening set for Purchase against Ramapo, Sidnam led the Roadrunners to a game two 25-12 win, collecting four kills on six attempts, hitting .500.
Ramapo went 8-16 (.250) with four errors as a team, while Purchase collected five kills on 17 attempts with nine errors hitting -.235 in the loss. In the final set, Ramapo hit 10-19 with three errors (.368) while Purchase hit a combined -.462 with two kills on 13 attempts and eight errors.
Edelmann led the Panthers with three kills, and Billen-Calhoun dished out seven assists.
Purchase is now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Skyline.
