Bellerose, NY
(Mar. 16, 2013) – Despite solid play to open the 2013 season, Purchase dropped two games Friday afternoon and one on Saturday before snow called off game two of its doubleheader with York College.
The Panthers fell 11-3 and 6-2, respectively, Friday afternoon at Brooklyn College. The hot Bulldogs improved to 4-0 on the season in the victories, dropping Purchase to 0-2.
First baseman
Christine Leo (JR/Monroe, CT) led the way with two hits and two RBIs in game one.
Abigail Katz (SR/Livingston, NJ) had a hit and an RBI in game two.
Brooklyn scored 11 runs on seven hits in the opener. BC's Stephanie Caravello was 1-2 on the day, but also walked twice, scored twice and had two RBI in the win. Pitcher Kaylay Hill got her second win in as many outings, and also got the offense started in the first with an RBI triple to give Brooklyn the 1-0 advantage.
In game two, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but BC came right back in the bottom of the inning with two runs on RBI singles from Samantha Rodriguez and Amanda Bisz.
On Saturday in Bellerose, on a cold and snowy day, York overcame a 6-1 deficit after scoring five runs in the fifth inning and another three runs in the sixth to defeat Purchase, 9-6, at Padavan-Preller Field.
The Cardinals found themselves in a 6-1 hole after the Panthers plated four runs in the third inning and two runs in the fifth.
In the fourth inning, Purchase scored all its runs with two outs.
Alexandra Prescia (FR/Staten Island, NY) brought home two runs with a single and pitcher Leo helped her own cause with a two-run home run.
York could only manage one run through the first four innings, which came in the third on a RBI-triple by Karen Werner.
In the bottom of the fifth, York loaded the bases with one out. Joviette Frederick brought the first run of the inning home on a ground ball that was booted by the second basemen. Purchase followed by recording the second out on a force play at home.
York's Geneva Faulk then came to the plate and lined a single down the left field line. Prescia, who was playing left, let the ball get by her, which cleared the bases and allowed Faulk to come all the way around to score the tying run.
In the bottom of the sixth, York loaded the bases again after three straight walks. Werner then followed with an RBI single to plate the go-ahead run. The next batter was Frederick who hit a fly ball to center field that was dropped, which allowed two more runs to score.
In the top of the seventh, York pitcher Priscilla Lallave loaded the bases, which brought the go-ahead run to the plate with two outs. However, she was able to induce a groundout to end the game.
The Cardinals (1-4) were scheduled to play a doubleheader against Purchase (0-3) but the snowy conditions forced the game to be called in the third inning before it was official.
