Purchase, NY
(Mar. 27, 2013) – Aside from a narrow defeat earlier in the season to powerhouse Baruch, the Purchase College men's tennis team has been dominant in every match this spring.
Wednesday afternoon was no different, as the Panthers soundly defeated visiting Brooklyn College, 9-0, in a rescheduled match that was postponed from earlier in the campaign. Purchase rolled to 6-1 on the season in the victory and only has a 5-4 blemish to Baruch on its schedule to date.
Purchase took care of business again on Wednesday, sweeping doubles.
Jeremyah Schur (SO/Forest Hills, NY) and
Brenden Keeling (SR/Ontario, Canada) teamed for an 8-1 win at No. 1;
Dylan DeBiase (JR/High Falls, NY) and
Chris Matchneer (SR/Larchmont, NY) added an 8-5 win at No. 2; and the tandem of
Pocholo Chavez (JR/Stony Point, NY) and
Simon Lai (SR/Garrison, NY) capped it in an 8-2 final at third doubles.
In singles, Schur, who is now 7-0 overall on the spring following Wednesday's 6-0, 6-1 final against Davis Zabiyaka, showed why he's making a serious case for Skyline Conference Player of the Year. Schur, like the Panthers, has been dominant throughout. He added his third straight Skyline Conference weekly honor on Monday and is well on his way to player of the year consideration.
Keeling followed suit in a 6-2, 6-0 win at second singles, and DeBiase contributed a strong 6-1, 6-1 performance at No. 3.
The match of the afternoon belonged to Matchneer, who outlasted Anthony Sideris in three sets (6-2, 5-7, 10-5). Chavez won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4, and Lai added a straight sets win at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0) as the Panthers finished off Spring Break on a high note.
Purchase will look to make it six straight wins on Apr. 2 at John Jay.
