(Mar. 5, 2013) – Baruch, a team that went three rounds deep into the NCAAs a year ago, was pushed to the brink by visiting Purchase Tuesday night at the U.S. National Tennis Center in Queens, narrowly holding off the Panthers, 5-4.
“Baruch is an excellent team,” said Purchase
head coach Peter Nestel. “I am pleased, especially since we are missing two starters from our lineup. It was a very strong non-conference showing for us … something we can build off moving forward.”
Purchase (1-1) split its six singles matches, but took all of the top three, including wins by
Jeremyah Schur (SO/Forest Hills, NY),
Brenden Keeling (SR/Ontario, Canada) and
Dylan DeBiase (JR/High Falls, NY).
But the Bearcats utilized two of three victories in doubles play to pull out the close win. After Keeling and Schur won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, topping Baruch's top tandem of Guy Goren and Artem Gorbachevskiy, the hosts earned an 8-3 win at No. 2 and an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.
The two early victories, coupled with the three wins in singles play, delivered the 5-4 decision.
Baruch is now 1-1, dropping Purchase to 1-1 on the season.
The Panthers will look to rebound Sunday at home in a rescheduled match with Bard College at home. That match was moved from Saturday (3/9) to Sunday, March 10 at 1 p.m.
