Panthers Fall at YU

Box Score

Flushing, NY (Apr. 22, 2013) – Men's tennis suffered a small setback in the final regular-season match of the spring, losing 5-4 to Yeshiva University Monday night at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center.

The play of the No. 3-6 singles slots was crucial as the Maccabees, which ended their 2012-13 campaign above .500, edged Purchase in a close final.

YU found itself down 2-1 after doubles play, with freshman Charles Saka and sophomore Robby Rubin teaming up for a 9-7 victory at the No. 3 flight versus the Panthers' Simon Lai (SR/Garrison, NY) and Pocholo Chavez (JR/Stony Point, NY).

Saka scored a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 3 singles versus Dylan DeBiase (JR/High Falls, NY), followed by a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) triumph over Chavez by Rubin at No. 4.

Meir Burk and Akiva Katz then grinded out three-set triumphs at the Nos. 5 and 6 flights, respectively, to send YU to the come-from-behind victory. Burk's 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 performance bested Purchase's Chris Matchneer (SR/Larchmont, NY), while Katz took out Lai by scores of 7-6 (7-4), 3-6 and 6-4.

For the Panthers, Jeremyah Schur (SO/Forest Hills, NY) and Brenden Keeling (SR/Ontario, Canada) won at first and second singles, respectively and the tandem partnered for a win at first doubles. Matchneer and DiBiase also won at second doubles.

Purchase will look to turn the corner and get set for Thursday's Skyline Conference semifinal at No. 2 Mount Saint Mary. That match is set for 5 p.m. The winner will advance to the league championship.
