Purchase, NY
(Apr. 8, 2013) – A seventh-inning rally by the College of Mount Saint Vincent in game one left Purchase on the wrong side of the scoreboard in the early going Monday afternoon, but the Panthers responded nicely in game two, pocketing a 5-1 victory en route to another Skyline Conference split.
Last time out at Purchase, the Panthers split with MSMC, today, Purchase dropped the opener 5-3 after holding a slim 3-2 margin heading into what appeared to be the final frame before the Dolphins scored three and then closed out the game in the bottom of the seventh.
But game two provided many more smiles for the Panthers, who scored five runs in the first inning and then made CMSV play catch up over the final six, which the Dolphins could not do against starter
Rebecca Pascarelli (JR/Brewster, NY). She was sharp, hurling seven innings of one-run softball, while striking out two and walking three. She allowed only one run in the second, but then pitched around any trouble the rest of the way.
In the five-run first of game two,
Kristy Colangelo (FR/Staten Island, NY) tripled,
Abigail Katz (SR/Livingston, NJ) singled,
Christine Leo (JR/Monroe, CT) singled and
ToniAnn Licata (SO/Mount Kisco, NY) doubled to plate all three. Shortly later, two errors would aid Purchase in adding another two runs to the frame.
Licata's clutch hit was the highlight of the sterling game-two win. It provided Purchase an early cushion and allowed Pascarelli to settle into a groove on the mound.
CMSV had six players record a hit apiece in game two, manufacturing a run in the second inning off Pascarelli.
In game one, both teams matched zeroes over the first two innings before the Dolphins scratched across a run in the third. Leo, who started on the mound in the opener, pitched a very good game for the Panthers. She went all seven innings, allowing five earned, striking out four, but it was the three-run seventh that nipped Purchase in the end, partially erasing the good vibe from Leo's strong six innings and the Panthers' early 3-2 margin.
Purchase scored three runs on two hits and one error in the third inning. Licata doubled and drove home two of those runs. Katz and
Christina Sanderson (JR/Schaghticoke, NY) scored two of the three runs in the inning, along with
Tara Stiansen (FR/Hampton Bays, NY), who collected two hits and played well at the hot corner. With Stiansen leading the charge in the infield at third base defensively, Colangelo was stupendous in center field, grabbing ball after ball. She had 11 putouts over two games.
Alexandra Prescia (FR/Staten Island, NY) also added one of Purchase's five hits in game one.
The Dolphins were led by three and four hole hitters Kathleen Davis and Danielle Maffei, respectively. The duo each notched three hits apiece, accounting for six of the team's 14 hits in game one. Dalton also started on the mound, receiving the win. She struck out nine in game one. Davis finished with one RBI and Maffei knocked in two.
Purchase will be the visiting team Tuesday at Purchase, when NYU-POLY hosts the Panthers at the campus field in a reschedule.
