Bronx, NY (Jan. 14, 2014) – No. 17 Purchase coasted to an 84-46 win at SUNY Maritime Tuesday night.
The Panthers were led by four double-figure scorers. Andre Nixon (SR/Harlem, NY) paced Purchase with 18 points. Center Joel Neri (JR/Port Chester, NY) added 16 and 13 rebounds, securing a double-double, while swingman Justin Person (JR/Greenburgh, NY) totaled 14 points and a game-high eight assists, and rookie Franklyn Mickens (FR/Glen Cove, NY) chipped in 11 points off the bench.
Purchase forward David Haughton (SR/Greenburgh, NY) also turned in a solid performance, adding six points and nine rebounds. New transfer Brandon Sillaro (JR/Patchogue, NY) tallied seven points off the bench for the Panthers in increased minutes.
In the loss, the Privateers dropped their first home game of the 2014 calendar year. Brendon Halligan led the team with 13 points, including a team-high three 3-pointers.
The rebounding differential was a big part of the game, as Purchase outrebounded Maritime by a 56-29 on the night. Points in the paint also proved to be a difference in the outcome as the Panthers netted 38 to the Privateers' 14 points in the key.
The game began with Purchase opening up a four-point edge, which Maritime recovered from. However, it wasn't long until Purchase overwhelmed the hosts, rattling off a 20-3 spurt and a 16-point advantage in the first half.
Through the waning minutes of the opening period, the Panthers opened up a 24-point lead.
Maritime opened up with five points out of the break, but Purchase regained its 20-point lead with 16:28 to go in the period.
The lead ballooned up to 32 points with 10:52 to go in the period.
After a Tim McNamara 3-pointer for Maritime with 3:11 left in the game, Purchase netted eight straight points to close out the game and come away with the 84-46 victory.
