Panthers Drop Two Tight Games; Foster Named to All-Tournament Team

Box Score - Colby
Box Score - Newbury

Willimantic, CT (Nov. 15-16, 2014) – The Purchase College men's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season this past weekend at Eastern Connecticut State in the program's annual tip-off.

Purchase dropped the first game Saturday 73-70 in overtime to Colby, despite a valiant effort. Colby got past Purchase, the tourney's 2013 champ, to advance to the Eastern final Sunday night. Taylor Foster (JR/Greenburgh, NY) forced the extra session by scoring in the paint with 18 seconds left.

The Panthers led by a point with two minutes to go in OT, but Colby's Luke Westman connected on two free throws to put Colby ahead for good, 68-67, with 1:49 left. Teammate Shane Rogers later sank two more free throws to push the lead to 70-67 with 13.4 seconds remaining.

Foster paced Purchase with 27 points and 11 rebounds.

The teams combined to hit 12 of 13 free throws in OT, but Colby's depth helped to spark the win. Four subs combined for 24 points and 12 rebounds in 67 minutes, while Purchase's starters accounted for all but 29 minutes.

In the men's consolation on Sunday, Purchase couldn't hold a seven-point lead with seven minutes left and couldn't capitalize on a 62-36 rebounding advantage as Newbury earned a 72-68 decision.

Newbury nailed 11 three-pointers. All-tournament pick Milciades Carrasco led the Nighthawks with 23 points and Purchase all-tournament selection Foster had 24 points and 15 rebounds. Center Kendall Felix (SR/Brooklyn, NY) added 19 points and 16 boards. Creig Graves (JR/Harlem, NY) and Anthony Walker (JR/Mount Vernon, NY) chipped in nine and eight points, respectively.

Eastern would go on to win both the men's and women's tournaments. On the men's side, Eastern was led by four double-digit scorers and tourney MVP Hugh Lindo in a 74-53 final over Colby for its ninth crown in 34 years of the event.
