Box Score
Brooklyn, NY (Feb. 10, 2014) – Purchase delivered its first win of the 2014 campaign on Monday night, topping NYU-POLY, 3-1.
The opening set of the night was a closely contested one throughout, as the score was tied 11 times. Poly's Fild Kroqi had back-to-back kills to tie the set at 18 apiece. Purchase gained the lead late behind a pair of kills by Kevon Kareem Bruce (SR/Hayes, Jamaica) as the visitors drew first blood, 25-22.
In set number two, the hosts were able to gain an advantage off of a handful of miscues, amounting to as much as a five-point lead.
However, the Panthers clawed back and tied the set at 24 after three straight scores.
Each team traded the lead, but neither could capture the winning point as the set was pushed to 29-all. Finally, Rishi Sarkar snuck one over the net followed by an attack error by Purchase, earning the Jays the win 31-29, and tying up the match.
Purchase rebounded in set three, putting together a couple of scoring runs, including a 6-1 spurt initiated by rookie Kevin Carges (FR/Brockport, NY), who had three kills to close out the third set, 25-15.
Carges and the Panthers carried the momentum through to the fourth set, exploding out of the gate and posting 12 straight points before the Jays were able to break the freshman's serve. He piled up a whopping six aces on the run. The hole was too much for Poly to climb out of, as the visitors cruised in the final set, 25-15.
For Purchase, Carges led both teams with 23 kills and fellow newcomer Andrew Schwab (FR/Merrick, NY) had a game-high 33 assists.
In defeat, Sarkar had 26 assists and Kroqi tallied 19 kills.
