Purchase, NY
(Mar. 13, 2014) – Bouncing back from a defeat last time out, the Purchase College men's volleyball team won for the second time in three matches, defeating St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn 3-0 Thursday night at home.
The Panthers, which lost to the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Mar. 4, put together a comfortable win over the Bears, posting a 25-15, 25-20 and 25-11. Purchase previously topped Yeshiva and has now won two of its last three matches.
The Panthers looked strong for the entire match and showed great chemistry on the floor. Meanwhile, the Bears showed spurts of solid play throughout, but were overpowered by the Panthers in the opening and final sets.
Kevon Kareem Bruce (SR/Hayes, Jamaica) and
Kevin Carges (FR/Brockport, NY) starred for Purchase in the win. Bruce's kills and Carges' jump serve really set the tone throughout the match.
The Panthers started the match with a 5-2 lead, but it quickly disappeared after the Bears tied it at six. Then, when Purchase went up, 15-8, they took their first timeout of the night. The tallest player on the court, SJC-BKLYN's Clyde Delacruz, imposed his will whenever possible, by blocking and tipping any kills back to the Purchase line of defense. Despite his impressive play, the Panthers took the first set 25-15 and looked strong on all fronts.
The visitors stepped up their game in the middle of the match and put the Panthers on their heels. As
Riley Damerell (FR/Rochester, NY) fired a potential kill into the net, Purchase looked a little unnerved in the middle stanza. The Panthers started to pull away when the score was 19-13 in their favor and reeled off the next two points and were able to pull away with the second set as well, although the Bears played their best in the second set.
Purchase's top players for the night were Bruce, Carges, Damerell and setter
Andrew Schwab (FR/Merrick, NY). Carges led the way with 18 kills and Bruce followed with 16. Schwab had a match-high 25 assists and Damerell handed out 13 of his own.
In defeat, the Bears' top performers were Iqbal Husain, Delacruz and Raul Urshela. Husain led the Bears in assists with 11. Delacruz had four kills in the contest, sharing the team-high with Urshela.
Purchase is now 5-8 overall and will return to action in two weeks at home, when the Panthers welcome Kean University.
