(Mar. 31, 2014) – The Purchase College men's tennis team took in Spring Break in sunny Orlando, Florida this past week.
Although the Panthers did not win a match against some elite competition,
head coach Peter Nestel was pleased with the play of his team, who used the four non-conference matches as a tune-up for the heart of the Skyline Conference schedule, which opens next week with Sage, Farmingdale State and Yeshiva on the way.
Purchase will be back in Tuesday at home against WestConn.
As for the Spring Break trip, the Panthers lost 9-0 to Hamline; 9-0 to Luther, 8-1 to UW Oshkosh and 9-0 to Piedmont.
"Some terrific teams, but still some very solid play on the part of our athletes," said Nestel, who said the trip was also about "bonding" and "camaraderie."
Returners
Poccholo Chavez (SR/Stony Point, NY) and
Dylan DeBiase (SR/High Falls, NY) headlined for Purchase, with newcomers
Riley Damerell (FR/Rochester, NY),
Danny De La Cruz (FR/Bronx, NY) and
Lev Pravda (SO/New York, NY), also performing well on the road trip.
"This is certainly some of the best competition the team will see this year," Nestel said. "It was a great tool for us in terms of strengthening our team for now and the in the future, and it's important to get some good reps this team of year, when our weather doesn't cooperate in the northeast. We took full advantage of the trip and now we're excited to be back and ready for matches that will determine our postseason."
