(Apr. 18, 2014) – The Purchase College men's tennis team honored lone senior
Pocholo Chavez by topping John Jay, 6-3, on Senior Day Friday at home.
Chavez (SR/Stony Point, NY) was recognized in a pre-match ceremony on the lower courts.
Sports Information Director Bobby Ciafardini MCed the brief event, which also included a small speech from
head coach Peter Nestel. Chavez, who received a Senior Day certificate, will also be honored during the program's annual awards banquet on May 5th. Nestel talked about Chavez' dedication to the team and his role as a teammate.
Chavez, who has played well in a rebuilding campaign for the Panthers, then went out and won at third singles, 6-3, 6-2.
The Panthers also scored single wins at first, fourth and fifth singles.
Danny De La Cruz (FR/Bronx, NY) won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 for the Panthers.
Jason Wieder (JR/Bayside, NY) won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 to cap the 6-3 victory.
Purchase started strong by going up 2-1 in doubles play. The Panthers won at first and third doubles.
Riley Damerell (FR/Rochester, NY) and
Dylan DeBiase (JR/High Falls, NY) captured an 8-5 win at No. 1. Wieder and
Lev Pravda (SO/New York, NY) teamed for an 8-6 victory at third doubles.
John Jay (1-9) won at second doubles and also earned victories at second and fourth singles.
Purchase (3-9) returns to action Monday in its final match of the season. The Panthers welcome Mount Saint Mary in a late afternoon reschedule.
