Box ScorePurchase, NY
(Apr. 21, 2014) – On the last match of their season, the Purchase men's tennis team fell to undefeated Mount Saint Mary College, 9-0.
Although Purchase didn't tally a victory, the individual contests were hard fought and the scoring was close.
With the win, the Knights climb to 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the Skyline Conference. The Panthers cap their season with an overall record of 3-10 and 1-5 in the league.
It was fitting that
Pocholo Chavez (SR/Stony Point, NY) had the last say of the Panthers' season, as it was his last contest in a Purchase uniform. He played a marathon of a match at third singles, coming up just short of a win to Mike Balokoz; a standout player in the league. The final tally was 6-4, 4-6 (11-9).
For the rest of singles match-ups,
Riley Damerell (FR/Rochester, NY) lost to the hard hitting Greg Jacob 6-2, 6-4 at first singles. At second singles,
Dylan DeBiase (JR/High Falls, NY) fell to Nate Dimmie 6-4, 6-3.
Rounding out the fourth, fifth and sixth spots,
Lev Pravda (FR/New York, NY) lost a closely contested match to Dan Witke 6-4, 6-4,
Danny Delacruz (FR/Bronx, NY) was overpowered by Gavin McNulty 6-0, 6-2, and
Jason Wieder (JR/Bayside, NY) lost 6-0, 6-2 to Conner Bean.
The doubles matches were a little more lopsided. The powerful duo of Jacob and Dimmie bested Damerell and DeBiase by a score of 8-2. Balokoz and McNulty defeated Chavez and Delacruz 8-1. Witke and Kevin Ryan beat Pravda and
Azario Mastrangelo (FR/Greenwich, CT) 8-3.
Although the Panthers struggled this season, they were determined throughout and always put forth tremendous effort. In the closing team meeting, head coach
Peter Nestel encouraged his team to improve on their games over the summer and to come back strong for the fall.
