Box Score

Purchase, NY (Apr. 8, 2014) – Men's volleyball dropped its final match of the 2014 season Tuesday night.

The Panthers fell to New Jersey City University by a final score of 25-23, 20-25, 24-26 and 21-25.

Although the home team started off strong, Kevon Kareem Bruce (SR/Hayes, Jamaica) thumped a potential kill into the top of the net toward the end of the first set, making the score 19-11.

From then on, his team was unable to regroup and play consistently. After an erroneous bump by Desmond Leigh, Purchase went up 23-17, but the Golden Knights did win the next two points. Even though the Panthers won the first set, it was much closer than they wanted it to be.

Purchase went down 9-5 to start the second set. Head coach Tom Callahan called a timeout with the score,18-14, in NJCU's favor.

After the second timeout in the same set, the Panthers were in a 23-17 deficit. Despite a serving error by Bill Le, the visiting team was able to pull away with the second set.

Unfortunately, the Panthers, despite some solid play over the final three sets, fell behind again. They trailed 4-0 early in the third set. Le and Daque Wilcox provided the impetus for the Golden Knights in the third stanza. Their team's firepower translated into a 22-12 margin. Purchase made a brief comeback to get within five, but they came up short.

Sheldon Coure punctuated the Golden Knights' strong performance with two kills to bring the score to 11-5 in the fourth. Purchase came back to tie at 16. After another Le kill, NJCC had a chance to win the match and closed out the set.

In defeat, the top contributors for the Panthers were Bruce, Kevin Carges (FR/Brockport, NY) and Andrew Schwab (FR/Merrick, NY). Bruce totaled 17 kills, five digs and two block assists. Carges had a nice offensive and defensive game with 13 kills and 12 digs. Schwab tallied 27 assists and nine digs.

For the Golden Knights, Gary Preston Jr. had 36 assists and eight digs. Le collected 10 kills and six digs. Coure followed with 13 kills, one dig, two block solos and two block assists. Wilcox contributed nine kills, three digs and four block assists. Kendall Tribbett put up eight kills, seven digs, one block solo and five block assists.

The Panthers (7-13) finished the regular season just outside the top four in the playoff bracket.
