Purchase, NY (Apr. 9, 2014) – Purchase men's tennis suffered a mild setback in a conference defeat to Yeshiva University Wednesday night at home.

The Maccabees looked strong in a 9-0 win over the Panthers, who dropped to 1-8. Purchase, fresh off a postponed matchup at Bard that was only minutes in before rain called it off, has struggled in the early going of the spring, despite some strong play from both the top and bottom of the order.

The young squad faced some challenging competition on Spring Break, but returned and earned its first win of the season this month. But now, Purchase has dropped two straight conference matches as the Panthers look to recover and make a late season push during a spring campaign that has been marred by inclement weather and a host of changes to the schedule.

As for Wednesday night's match, the Panthers ran into the conference-best Macs. YU is now 9-1 overall and 5-1 in the Skyline. The Macs utilized a sweep in doubles to get rolling on what turned out to be a very cold evening at Purchase. The match started at 8 p.m. and went until about 10:45 p.m., with the Macs earning an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles; an 8-4 victory at No. 2 and an 8-1 win at No. 3.

YU's Steven Jemal and Igal Mostkov bested Riley Damerell (FR/Rochester, NY) and Dylan DeBiase (SR/High Falls, NY) at first doubles, which set the tone for the rest of the match.

Mostkov, arguably the best player in the conference this season, topped Damerell in straight sets at first singles (6-0, 6-0). Dmitri Lebedyev added a 6-1, 6-0 win at second singles and Jemal then topped Pocholo Chavez (SR/Stony Point, NY), who just garnered a league honor roll mention Monday, at No. 3 (6-3, 6-2). The Macs closed out the win with victories at the bottom of the order.

Purchase will travel to Sarah Lawrence this weekend before returning to the campus to face Mount Saint Mary on Apr. 15.
