(Apr. 9, 2014) – The Purchase College softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday evening at home.
Brooklyn earned a pair of wins, taking the opener, 12-2, and game two, 10-0.
The power-hitting Bulldogs started strong with two runs in the first. The visitors did not let up, adding single runs in the second and third, while Purchase tried to regroup against starter Kayla Hill.
Hill shutout the Panthers until the fifth, when Brooklyn sprinted out to an 8-0 margin and was about to close out the victory before left fielder
Amanda Green (FR/Roslyn Heights, NY) doubled in Purchase's first run.
Brooklyn scored four runs in the top half of the fifth and then four more in the sixth. Samantha Rodriguez and Stephanie Caravello led the way with three hits apiece in the opener. Caravello and Amanda Bisz accounted for six RBI.
For Purchase,
Christine Leo (SR/Monroe, CT), who is still in pursuit of career-hit No. 100, collected two more in game one. Teammate
ToniAnn Licata (JR/Mount Kisco, NY) added a hit and an RBI in the loss.
In the circle, Hill picked up the win and Fortuna took the loss.
Game two brought more of the same for Brooklyn, who opened with three runs in each of the first two frames.
Brooklyn starter Marie Oneto was also strong, limiting Purchase to one hit over the first four innings.
Aided by an error, the Bulldogs scored a single run in the third, despite a nice double play by the Panthers, with Leo gunning down a runner at third following a 6-3 groundout. With two outs, Brooklyn managed to squeeze across one more run, manufacturing the run to push the lead to 8-0.
The visitors added single runs in the fourth and fifth, but Licata limited the damage in the fifth by striking a batter with the bases loaded.
However, offensively, Purchase could not back on track as Oneto pitched a two-hitter (Licata and
Tara Stiansen (SO/Hampton Bays, NY) collected hits).
Licata took the loss in game two for Purchase. Oneto collected the victory.
The Panthers will now face the College of Mount Saint Vincent this weekend at Sarah Lawrence in Bronxville.
