That was the story for the Purchase College men's basketball team Saturday at Farmingdale State. The same tagline could be applied to guard
Troy Singleton (JR/Queens, NY), who paced the surging Panthers with a scorching 39 points.
Final score: Purchase 86, Farmingdale 73.
The Panthers have now won three straight conference games in the New Year to up their league record – and standing – to 4-3. Purchase defeated Sarah Lawrence, SUNY Maritime and now FSC, going 3-1 in 2015.
In the loss, FSC falls to 3-11 overall and 1-6 in the conference, while Purchase improves to 4-10 overall and one-game over .500 in the Skyline standings.
Trailing 22-11 with 12:32 on the clock, the Rams used a 7-0 run over the next 1:33 to pull within four, 22-18.
But behind Singleton that lead increased to a 45-35 advantage at the break following his 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including 4 of 5 from behind the arc in the first half.
The Panthers led 61-42 with 13:30 left to play before an 11-2 Farmingdale run cut the deficit to 63-51.
Leading 70-58 with less than seven minutes remaining, Purchase used a 12-2 spurt to open up its largest lead of the game at 82-60.
Despite closing the game with nine unanswered points the Rams fell, 86-73.
Rams freshman forward Eriq Williams scored a team-high 17 points, had nine rebounds and three blocks in the loss.
Singleton shot 11 of 17 from the field, including 6 of 9 from 3 and 11 of 13 at the line en route to his 39 points.
Creig Graves (JR/Harlem, NY) added 12 points and teammate
Justin Person (SR/Greenburgh, NY) pulled down 10 rebounds and registered six assists, two steals and two blocks in the win.
The Panthers are back in action next Thursday at Sage.
