(Feb. 10, 2015) — Lehman College played the role of spoiler as the Lightning upset Purchase, 3-2, in the Panther home opener Tuesday night. Set scores were 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 23-25 and 15-7.
Coming off two straight wins, the Panthers failed to make it three and drop to 2-5 overall with the loss. Lehman advances to 3-2 overall with the win.
Both teams looked evenly matched in the opening game, with each side trading runs. After winning the first game, the Lightning never looked back, taking the second game, 25-18.
The third and most hard fought set saw several lead changes. The Panthers tallied a set-high 14 kills in the Stanza as they clawed their way to the first win of the evening.
Purchase rode the momentum into the fourth set and rallied to tie the match 2-2 heading into the fifth set. Miguel Gallardo and Ahmad Abugharbieh totaled six of the teams eight kills in the final set to lead the Lightning to a tiebreaker win, 15-7.
For the Panthers, outside hitter
Kevin Carges (SO/Brockport, NY) led the way with a match-high 20 kills and seven digs. Junior setter
Kevin Egbert (Saratoga Springs, NY) was an ace playmaker as he tallied 41 assists. Teammate
Chase Lokke (JR/Granite Bay, CA) added to the effort with 12 kills and five digs. Another eight kills and seven digs were tallied by outside hitter
Riley Damerell (SO/Rochester, NY).
Lehman was paced by Jaleel Lino who totaled a team-high 15 kills on 17 total attempts as well as leading the defense with 12 total digs.
Up next, the Panthers will travel to Brooklyn this Thursday for a 7 p.m. non-conference match against Pratt Institute.
