Kevin Carges and
Riley Damerell, the Purchase men's volleyball team blanked Pratt Institute 3-0 (17-25, 19-25, 21-25) Thursday evening at the Pratt ARC.
Carges (SO/Brockport, NY) totaled a match-high 20 kills on 35 attempts for an impressive .400 hitting percentage. Damerell (SO/Rochester, NY) added another 11 kills while notching seven digs and two service aces. Junior
Kevin Egbert (Saratoga Springs, NY) led all players with a match-high 32 assists and chipped in on defense with five digs.
Pratt opened up the scoring with a service ace from Alex Arsovski. The Cannoneers were up to start but two Purchase kills from junior
Matthew McCarthy (Fayetteville, NY) and a Damerell kill put the Panthers ahead, 14-10. Another Arsovski ace pulled Pratt to within 14-15, but Carges totaled four kills in the Panthers 10-3 run to close out the 25-17 first set win.
Pratt earned another early lead on a Connan Moody ace that placed the Cannoneers ahead 8-5. Four Purchase errors followed by an Arsovski kill found Pratt on top 12-5, and the Cannoneers looked poised to tie the match at 1-1. The Panthers promptly answered with a 10-0 run fueled by three
Andrew Schwab (SO/Merrick, NY) kills and capped by a McCarthy service ace, going on top 15-12. Two Carges kills in the final three points closed out Purchase's 25-19 victory.
In the third set, with score knotted at 14-14, the Panthers rallied to score six of the next eight points, with a David Cutler service error closing out Purchase's 25-21 win.
For the night, Purchase hit .288, holding Pratt to just a .114 attack.
The Panthers return to the court on Saturday as they host John Jay College in a non-conference match starting at 11 a.m.
