(Feb. 14, 2015) – The Purchase men's volleyball team came from behind to defeat John Jay College, 3-2 (19-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-23, 16-14), in a non-conference match Saturday afternoon.
The win bumps the Panthers up to 4-5 overall while the Bloodhounds drop to 2-2.
In the opening set, John Jay pulled ahead quickly, leading 7-4 at the first timeout. Outside hitter Juan DeJesus totaled five of the visitors 10 kills in the set to lead the Bloodhounds to the 25-19 win.
Two straight service aces from outside hitter
Riley Damerell (SO/Rochester, NY) put the Panthers ahead, 21-14, in the second stanza. Purchase would take it to 25 off a Bloodhound attacking error to end the set.
In the third set, the visitors jumped out to an early lead. A 22-18 Bloodhound lead would force the Panthers into a second timeout. The home team rallied for two but a
Kevin Egbert (JR/Saratoga Springs, NY) service error would end the set, 25-20 in favor of the visitors.
The Panthers opened up the fourth set with a 2-0 run. The Bloodhounds answered back quickly to take the lead but a service ace from
Matthew McCarthy (JR/Fayetteville, NY) and a kill from
Chase Lokke (JR/Granite Bay, NY) would tie the game at 11. A Damerell service ace would put the Panthers ahead, 18-16 and block assists from Schwab and McCarthy would make it 20-17 in Purchase favor. The Panthers rallied another four points to make it 24-23, and a kill by Damerell sent both teams into a fifth tiebreaker set.
In the fifth set, two straight service aces from Egbert would put the home team ahead 8-5 but a 4-point Bloodhound rally tied the set at nine. A Lokke kill put the Panthers back in the lead but a service ace from Yevgeniy Remennik made it 11 all. The score would tie two more times before a John Jay attacking error would end the set, 16-14, in Purchase favor.
Kevin Carges (SO/Brockport, NY) led the Panthers with 12 kills, nine digs and seven blacks. Lokke added 10 kills while
Andrew Schwab (SO/Merrick, NY) registered nine kills, four digs and five blocks.
Damerell totaled an impressive 8 kills on 18 attempts for a match-high .444 hitting percentage.
John Jay's Jack Palleschi led all players with 18 kills and 13 digs.
Purchase returns to action on the road next Saturday for a Skyline Conference tri-match hosted by New Jersey City University.
