Kevin Carges (Brockport, NY) collected 23 of his match-high 33 kills in the final three sets as the Panthers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to down host City College of New York in a five-set tiebreaker Thursday evening at Nat Holman Gymnasium, 20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 32-30, 15-11.
The win was Purchase's second of the week as they advance their record to 2-4 overall. In defeat, the Beavers drop to 1-2.
After losing the first two sets, the Panthers produced 12 kills on 24 total attempts in the third frame and earned their first set-win of the night. Purchase led a two-to three-point margin for most of the set, giving up the lead only once early on.
The lead in the fourth set went back and forth between the two teams and ended in Purchase favor after three straight kills from Carges, assisted by
Kevin Egbert (JR/Saratoga Springs, NY).
The Beavers took an early 5-2 lead in the fifth-set tiebreaker, but Purchase would go on a 13-6 scoring run to win the match, 15-11.
Along with the 33 kills, Carges totaled 16 digs and three service aces. Adding to the effort,
Riley Damerell (SO/Rochester, NY) collected 13 kills and a team-high 18 digs on the night. Teammate
Andrew Schwab (SO/Merrick, NY) chipped in with eight kills, four digs and two solo blocks, while Egbert totaled a match-high 40 assists.
Up next, the Panthers are set to host Lehman College in their home-opener match on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
