Softball Leaps Out to 2-0 Start

Bronx, NY (March 15, 2015) – The Panther softball team is 2-0 to start the season following Sunday's clean sweep over Yeshiva University at Murphy Field on the campus of Fordham University.

The Panthers topped YU, which was playing its first NCAA games in program history in the sport of softball, 16-1 in game one and followed with an 8-0 shutout behind standout newcomer Samantha Alonzo (JR/Wappinger, NY). Alonzo struck out 11 and walked none in collecting her first win of the season in the circle.

Alonzo, who played first base in the opener, also went 4 for 5 over two games at the plate, batting .800, while also tossing the two-hit shutout in game two.

Game one starter Nicole Fortuna (SO/New Rochelle, NY) earned the win for Purchase and was sharp, striking out 10 and allowing only one first-inning run.

The twin bill sweep dropped YU to 0-2 in its season-opening appearance.

In game one, Purchase scored three runs in the top of the first and nine in the top of the second to lead 12-1 after two innings. 

The Panthers then scored two more in the third, one more in the fourth and another in the fifth to take a 16-1 lead.

Purchase was led by Alexandra Prescia (JR/Staten Island, NY) who was 3 for 5 with two RBI, while Alonzo went 3 for 4.  

Rachel Mirsky got the first hit and run batted in for the Macs. Erin Potasnick started in the circle for YU in the opener. Potasnick pitched 5.0 innings and allowed 16 runs (nine earned) while striking out four.
 
In game two, Purchase, playing as the home team, scored five runs in the bottom of the first to lead 5-0 after one inning. The Panthers extended their lead to 6-0 after scoring once in the third. Then Purchase scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to win the game by eight runs.

Yeshiva had two hits in the nightcap.

Purchase was led by ToniAnn Licata (SR/Mount Kisco, NY) who was 3 for 3 with two doubles, a run and a RBI.
