(March 18, 2015) – Softball continued its strong start to 2015 Wednesday night at Brooklyn, opening with a 12-8 victory before narrowly dropping game two, 11-10.
The Panthers are now 3-1 after the first four games of the season. Brooklyn is 1-1.
In the opener, Purchase scored three times in the first and added a five-spot in the fourth and four more runs in the seventh, closing the four-run win.
Samantha Alonzo (JR/Wappingers Falls, NY) earned the victory and is now 2-0 in the circle to start the spring.
The Panthers pounded out 12 hits in the first game, highlighted by two apiece from
Jessica Smith (JR/Yonkers, NY),
Tara Stiansen (JR/Hampton Bays, NY) and Alonzo.
Shannon Clancy (FR/Babylon, NY) and
Mary Adams (SO/Milton, PA) added three and two RBI, respectively. Stiansen also brought home three of her own in game one.
Purchase had five doubles in the opener.
Brooklyn bounced back in a big way in game two, jumping out to a 10-3 lead; however a five-run fifth inning for the Panthers saw the game close to 10-8. Brooklyn's Kayla Hill came on in relief to clinch the win. Hill also went 3 for 4 at the plate in the game.
The Panthers collected 10 more hits in the second game, highlighted by two hits, three runs and an RBI from Alonzo and a big day at the plate for
Briana Leon (SO/Glen Cove, NY), who smashed two hits and totaled four RBI.
Purchase is scheduled to face St. Joseph's College-LI this Saturday, weather permitting. The Panthers' matchup with Old Westbury – the team's newly slated home opener for Sunday – has already been postponed and rescheduled for another date.
