(Mar. 24, 2015) – Earning their second consecutive win in two days, the Purchase men's volleyball team defeated Yeshiva University, 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-20), in a Skyline Conference match Tuesday evening.
The Panthers started off strong, taking an early 7-1 lead in the first set, which forced a timeout from the visiting squad. Yeshiva started to mount a comeback but was soon put to a stop after Purchase reeled off five consecutive points to take a 15-5 lead.
Kevin Carges (SO/Brockport, NY) led the charge early in the match, spiking two kills late in the first set.
The Maccabees answered back in the second set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead and forcing a Panther timeout. An
Andrew Schwab (SO/Merrick, NY) kill put the Panthers within three points of the visitors. The set remained close in the final points but the Panthers were able to claim the stanza win off a service ace from
Chase Lokke (JR/Granite Bay, CA).
Purchase took an early 9-4 lead in the third set and never looked back. With victory in sight, the home squad picked up the intensity and went on to take an 18-10 lead later in the final stanza. Yeshiva didn't let up though, putting up six straight points to get within three before Purchase would claim the 25-20 win.
The Panthers were paced by Carges,
Chase Lokke and Schwab. Carges had 15 kills without a single error on 32 total attempts, while collecting seven digs. Lokke compiled 11 kills on 23 total attempts with seven digs and one service ace. Schwab totaled eight kills, five digs, two service aces and an assist.
Purchase combined for 43 total kills, paced by setter
Kevin Egbert (JR/Saratoga Springs, NY), who tallied 34 assists. Defensively, libero
Matthew McCarthy (JR/Fayetteville, NY) totaled a match-high 20 digs.
Yeshiva was led by Kolya Miller, who tallied a team-high 12 digs with five kills all assisted by Jorge Dabah. Dabah went on to collect all 16 assists for the Maccabees.
Purchase is now 7-14 overall and 2-7 in league play. Their next match is against Skyline opponent New Jersey City University and is set for this Friday at 7 p.m.
