Game 1Game 2Rye Brook, NY
(March 28, 2015) – The Purchase College softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep to open home play (6-2, 7-6) at the hands of the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins Saturday afternoon at Blind Brook Field.
Rookie
Shannon Clancy (FR/Babylon, NY) was the lone bright spot for the Panthers in Game 1, as she blasted a sacrifice fly to right field to bring
Samantha Alonzo (JR/Wappingers Falls, NY) in to score in the fourth, and added a RBI triple in the sixth which tied the game, 2-2, heading into the top of the seventh.
Despite the continuous snowfall and wind chill, the Dolphins rallied for the win in the seventh with four runs on three hits.
Purchase pitcher
Nicole Fortuna (SO/New Rochelle, NY) (1-3) pitched a complete game, giving up six runs (all earned) on six hits, walking five and striking out four.
Rachel Heizer (2-1) allowed just two hits and two runs, as she fanned seven batters to take the win for the Mount.
In Game 2, the Dolphins jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after one inning of play and tacked on five more in the fifth inning to go up 7-2.
A seventh inning Panther rally ignited by a three-run homer from
ToniAnn Licata (SR/Mount Kisco, NY) and a RBI single from Alonzo put Purchase within one run of tying the game.
Clancy was then picked-off at first but before the out was made, teammate
Briana Leon (SO/Glen Cove, NY) advanced home to tie the score and send the game into extra innings.
Both teams went scoreless in the eighth inning. A Panther error in the top of the ninth would allow one run in for the Dolphins and the final run of the game. Purchase struggled off the bat in the bottom half of the inning as the Mount went on to take the 7-6 victory.
Panther pitcher Alonzo was tagged with the loss in a complete-game effort. She allowed seven runs (five earned) on ten hits while striking out two.
With the losses, Purchase falls to 3-5 overall and 0-4 in Skyline Conference play, while the Mount moves to 2-7 and 2-0 in the league.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow with a home game against Mount Saint Mary College. The Skyline doubleheader will be played at Blind Brook Field, starting at 3 p.m.
