(April 11, 2015) – The Purchase College women's softball team carved up a twin bill sweep Saturday at Sarah Lawrence.
The Panthers fell behind in Game 1 by three runs, but battled back and earned a 10-3 win before closing the door in a shortened 12-0 victory in Game 2. Purchase looked sharp at Mary LeVine field, improving to 6-8 overall and 2-6 in the Skyline Conference.
Sarah Lawrence (0-16, 0-6 Skyline) was first on the scoreboard in game one. In the bottom of the first, SLC rookie Em Hammett put the ball in play and reached first base on an infield single. Tori Himes followed with a hit down the right line, and rookie Riley Vuyovich followed with a shot to the same place, loading the bases. Kamaron McNair plated Hammett with a fourth hit in a row. Himes then came home on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, rookie Eleni Spentzouris knocked an RBI-single into right center field, bringing Vuyovich to the plate for a 3-0 Gryphon lead.
Purchase plated one run in the second inning and another in the third, trimming the gap to 3-2.
Purchase changed the dynamic of the game by scoring seven runs—four earned—in the top of the sixth inning, taking a 9-3 advantage. The Panthers tacked on another run in the seventh to round out the scoring.
Nicole Fortuna (SO/New Rochelle, NY) paced Purchase offensively in Game 1. She went 3 for 5 with one run and two RBI.
Alexandra Prescia (JR/Staten Island, NY) and
Briana Leon (SO/Glen Cove, NY) collected two hits as the trio accounted for seven of the team's 11 hits in the opener.
ToniAnn Licata (SR/Mount Kisco, NY) and
April Uhl (SO/Jackson Heights, NY) recorded two RBI apiece.
Panther starter
Samantha Alonzo (JR/Wappingers Falls, NY) earned her fourth win of the season with eight strikeouts while holding the damage to three earned runs off SLC's season-high 10 hits.
In game two, Purchase controlled the action from start to finish. The Panthers scored an even dozen runs in the first three innings while shutting out the Gryphons. Fortuna earned the shutout win with nine strikeouts and only one walk.
Fortuna also kniocked in one run in Game 2.
Tara Stiansen (JR/Hampton Bays, NY) and
Shannon Clancy (FR/Babylon, NY) had the big games offensively. Stiansen went 3 for 4 with one run and two RBI, while Clancy went 2 for 2 with four RBI and two runs scored. Licata added two hits and two RBI and Leon also recorded two hits in the Game 2 sweep. Licata and Clancy hit two homers on the day, while Stiansen also went yard in the win.
SLC recorded three hits in the finale.
