(April 15, 2015) – The Purchase men's tennis team clinched a thrilling 5-4 victory over Skyline Conference Farmingdale State this evening. The match was highlighted by the singles performance of undefeated
Cedric Bluman (SR/Tarrytown, NY), who tallied the winning point for the home team at the No. 4 spot.
With the win, Purchase (7-2, 5-1 SKY) advanced its win streak to five and secured a home court playoff match on April 22, while Farmingdale drops to 7-3 and 2-1 in league action.
The Rams' Tyler Danzy and Chris Hunter opened up the scoring for the match with an 8-0 shutout over
Riley Damerell (SO/Rochester, NY) and
Dylan DeBiase (SR/High Falls, NY) at first doubles. The Panthers answered back at the No. 2 and 3 spots after Bluman and
Joseph Troop (JR/Yonkers, NY) defeated Kevin Palacios and Marvin Beaubrun, 8-1, and brothers Chisei and
Taimu Tomita (FR/Higashiyama, Japan) battled for a 9-8 (8-6) tiebreaker victory over Karuppiah Karuppiah and Aravind Mahalingam.
Farmingdale gained a quick two points in singles play, taking a 3-2 lead, after Hunter defeated Damerell, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 1 spot and Danzy bested DeBiase, 6-2, 6-0, at second singles. Taimu and
Chisei Tomita rallied for Purchase, earning 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-2 wins at the fifth and sixth positions, and putting the Panthers ahead yet again with a score of 4-3.
Farmingdale tied the match, 4-4, after a Ram win at third singles. Palacious battled for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 come-from-behind win against Troop.
With the match on the line, Bluman powered his way to a 6-1 third-set win over Dan Baruch at No. 4 singles. The standout rookie lost the first set, 2-6, but revived in the second set after going neck-and-neck for the 7-5 win. Bluman kept the momentum going in the third set and cruised to a 6-1 victory.
The Panthers are back in action tomorrow with a non-conference road match at FDU-Florham starting at 3:30 p.m.
