(April 17, 2015) – Purchase softball posted a twin bill sweep of conference rival Old Westbury Friday at home – the program's first games of the season on its home field.
The host Panthers took the opener 3-1 before closing out the sweep in an 8-3 come-from-behind win over the OW Panthers. A six-run third inning keyed the Game 2 victory.
In Game 1, Purchase jumped on the board in the second inning, scoring two runs. The host Panthers scored their first run on some solid base running by starting pitcher
Samantha Alonzo (JR/Wappingers Falls, NY). Alonzo reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a bunt and error. The fleet-footed play took Old Westbury off guard.
Purchase head coach then opted to pinch hit rookie sensation
Shannon Clancy (FR/Babylon, NY), who rewarded her coach with a pinch-hit home run. The solo shot increased the lead to 2-0.
The Panthers added a third run in the third on an RBI double by
Briana Leon (SO/Glen Cove, NY).
Meanwhile, Alonzo settled in, in the circle, posting four scoreless frames on two hits through the first four innings.
Old Westbury (3-21, 0-10 Skyline Conference) loaded the bases in the fifth and scored its first run on a sacrifice fly, but Purchase capped the inning by doubling up a runner at second to keep the 3-1 lead intact.
That's how the game would end with Alonzo closing the door over the final two innings. She tossed the final bunt comebacker to first baseman
ToniAnn Licata (SR/Mount Kisco, NY), sealing the win. Alonzo pitched the complete game, allowing the lone run, while striking out three. She improved to 5-4 in the victory.
Nicole Fortuna (SO/New Rochelle, NY) started game two and nearly eluded some trouble in the first, putting runners at the corners before striking out back-to-back hitters. But Old Westbury's Corrine Protasiewicz singled home both runners for a quick 2-0 strike in the top half of the first.
A single by
Amanda Green (SO/Roslyn Heights, NY) plated Purchase's first run in the third. Alonzo, who is now three hits shy of 100 for her career, doubled in two runners shortly later. An error brought across the next run before
Mary Adams (SO/Milton, PA) drove plated another on an RBI single.
Purchase would score six runs on four hits and two errors in the frame. The Panthers tacked on two in the fifth to close out the win.
Fortuna went the distance, striking out three in collecting the victory in the circle.
Alexandra Prescia (JR/Staten Island, NY) accounted for three of the Panthers' eight hits in Game 2. Alonzo, Green, Adams, Prescia and
Antonina Fiore (FR/Mount Sinai, NY) all had RBIs in the win.
OW was led offensively by Gabriella Valdes and Protasiewicz. Valdes, OW's leadoff hitter who had the sac fly in Game 1, notched three hits and one run in the loss. Protasiewicz went 2 for 4 with three RBI in Game 2. OW starter Nicole DeCola took the losses in both games.
Purchase (8-12, 4-8 Skyline) returns to action Saturday against Farmingdale State. First pitch is set for noon.
