(March 18, 2016) – The men's tennis team bounced back from their home opener loss with a 5-4 victory over the College of Staten Island Dolphins.
The non-conference win bumped the Panthers to 3-2 on the year. CSI falls to 0-1.
Purchase jumped on the Dolphins early with a win by
Joseph Troop (SR/Yonkers, NY) and
Riley Damerell (JR/Rochester, NY) at No. 1 doubles, 8-1, over Chris Livoti and Alex Tsui. The Dolphins went on to score victories at second and third doubles by scores of 8-4 and 8-6, respectively.
Finbar Stuart (FR/Woodstock, NY) got the singles going for Purchase with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tsui. Matthew Vesci and Mitchel Voloshin put the Dolphins back on top with wins at fourth and sixth singles, respectively. The Dolphins were ahead 4-2 with three matches remaining.
Troop rounded out a perfect day by defeating Chris Pinto 6-3, 6-2. Down 4-3, Purchase's
Danny De La Cruz (JR/Bronx, NY) and Damerell headed into third sets.
Damerell was able to overcome his first set loss and ended up winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 at first singles over Livoti.
The match was all-square at 4-4 as De La Cruz headed into a third set tiebreaker against Andrew Adia at third singles. De La Cruz was able to pull out a victory in the windy conditions, 7-4, in the tiebreaker.
The victory marked the Panthers second 5-4 victory on the year. They will look to keep the momentum going into their conference opener at St. Joseph's College– Long Island on Sunday.
