(Apr. 28, 2016) – The Purchase men's tennis team swept doubles play en route to a 7-2 win over Sarah Lawrence University Thursday evening in Skyline Conference action. The Panthers advanced to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in the league while the visiting Gryphons dropped to 5-7, 3-4 in the SKY.
Riley Damerell (JR/Rochester, NY) and
Joseph Troop (SR/Yonkers, NY) dominated in number one doubles for Purchase, picking up the 8-0 shutout over Matias Sanchez and Ian Gonzalez.
Danny De La Cruz (JR/Bronx, NY) and
Brian Doherty (FR/Mattituck, NY) combined for the win in second doubles, defeating Andre Garibaldi and Juan Sucre by a score of 8-4. First-years
Isaac Lee (FR/New York, NY) and
Finbar Stuart (FR/Woodstock, NY) battled to an 8-6 win in the third spot.
In singles competition, Damerell and Troop picked up consecutive set wins at the number one and two spots, respectively. Gonzalez and Garibaldi picked up the only two points for Sarah Lawrence on the evening, as Gonzalez won with a 7-4 tie-breaker set at third singles and Garibaldi battled to a 10-5 tie-breaker triumph at the fourth spot.
Stuart and Doherty rounded out the scoring for the Panthers with wins at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
Purchase returns to action this Saturday, when the team hosts its Senior Day match against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn). The Skyline matchup is set to start at 11 a.m.
