(Mar. 28, 2018) – The Purchase men's tennis team recorded its first win of the season with an impressive 9-0 shutout over the visiting Bears of St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers move to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Skyline Conference, while SJC drops to 1-3, 1-1 in the league.
The Panthers won all three doubles points to start off the afternoon.
Austin Schmitt (SO/Hilton, NY) and rookie
Hope Crawford (FR/Mamaroneck, NY) paired up at No. 1 doubles and won 8-3, while
James Ham (SO/Rye, NY) and
Finbar Stuart (JR/Woodstock, NY) dominated at second doubles, winning 8-0. The dynamic duo of
Noah Marthaller (SR/Canandaigua, NY) and team captain
Brian Doherty (JR/Mattituck, NY) rounded out doubles play with an 8-0 shutout win over the Bears' Jack Dominics and Stephane Etheart.
Purchase kept up the momentum in singles action, sweeping the Bears 6-0, respectively. Crawford, Ham and Schmitt each tallied their first singles win of the season. Crawford defeated Shivam Ghai, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot and Ham defeated Daniel Vaitzman at the No. 2 spot. At third singles, Schmitt took at 6-1, 6-0 victory.
Stuart advanced his singles record to 2-1 with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Santiago Martin at fourth singles. Marthaller and Doherty brought in the final two wins for the Panthers. Marthaller defeated Dominics, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot and at sixth singles, Doherty delivered a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
Purchase heads to Patchogue, NY on Friday a Skyline match hosted by St. Joseph's College (L.I.).
