Purchase, NY
(April 13, 2018) – Hunter College presented a strong non-conference opponent for Purchase Friday late afternoon.
The Panthers squared off against the undefeated Hawks and performed well, but ultimately losing all three doubles played a large role in the 6-3 defeat.
Hunter is now 7-0 following the non-conference matchup. The Panthers fell to 2-6.
The Hawks were strong in the first two doubles pairings, winning 8-0 and 8-5 at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.
The Panthers battled back and lost at No. 3 in a tiebreaker. Purchase's
Noah Marthaller (SR/Canandaigua, NY) and
Brian Doherty (JR/Mattituck, NY) were edged 8-7 (7-5).
Trailing 3-0, Purchase showed plenty of resilience, taking singles wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6, where Doherty had a nice day on the courts. Doherty won 1-6, 6-4, 10-7, coming from behind to topple Ryan Hwang.
Finbar Stuart (JR/Woodstock, NY) also won a marathon match against Omer Khalifa at No. 4, besting his opposition from Hunter, 6-4, 3-6, 10-3 in a super set.
Standout rookie
Hope Crawford (FR/Mamaroneck, NY) continued to impress as well. Purchase's No. 1 defeated Nasser Ghaffar 6-2, 6-3 at first singles.
But the Panthers never recovered from the early deficit in doubles, as the Hawks managed to capture wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles en route to taking the match.
