Brian Doherty posted his third singles victory of the season Saturday, but it was not enough as the Purchase College men's tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to Skyline Conference opponent U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
In defeat, the Panthers fall to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in the Skyline. The host Mariners improve to 5-5 on the season and remain undefeated in league action at 4-0.
Doherty (JR/Mattituck, NY) posted the only win for Purchase on the afternoon. The determined team captain battled to a 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) victory over USMMA's Brandon Deeter at fifth singles.
Purchase returns to its home courts on Wednesday, April 11 to host Yeshiva University. The Skyline matchup is slated for 6 p.m.
