Baseball Splits with CMSV as Panther Win Streak Comes to Halt

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Riverdale, NY (March 30, 2019) – Purchase College claimed game two of a Skyline Conference doubleheader, 7-3, after the College of Mount Saint Vincent baseball team batted in a 7-3 victory In the opener Saturday afternoon at Vikings Field.

The loss snaps a six-game winning streak for the Panthers as they move to 9-17 overall and 5-9 in the Skyline. CMSV sits at 8-8 overall and 4-2 in the league after the Dolphins picked up their first win against Purchase since 2015.

Game One: CMSV 7, Purchase 3
Anthony Nocero and Michael Grisanti got things rolling for Mount Saint Vincent with back-to-back RBI groundouts in the bottom of the first inning.

Purchase lit up the board in the following inning on a Nick Tuozzola (SR/Milford, CT) RBI single to center field that brought senior pitcher Brian Cunningham (Westbury, NY) around to score.

In the top of the fourth, senior outfielder Matthew Villalobos (Brooklyn, NY) smashed a two-run home run to push Purchase out in front, 3-2.
The advantage was quickly erased, however, as CMSV rallied with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Dolphins tacked on two more in the eighth to close game one with the 7-3 victory.

Mount starter Amir Nitowski (2-2) picked up the win in Saturday's opener. He tossed a complete game with 12 strikeouts, nine hits and not a single walk.

Game Two: Purchase 7, CMSV 3
The Panthers regrouped and returned to the diamond fired up for game two. The Purchase offense erupted with three runs in the opening inning thanks to a 2-RBI triple by Cunningham and a RBI groundout from freshman outfielder Jemal Betances (Bronx, NY), respectively.

The Mount batted in a run in the bottom half of the inning but Purchase answered back with four more swipes over the plate in the third to take a 7-1 lead. Sophomore second baseman Dylan Flynn (Hauppauge, NY) led off the inning with a single up the middle and later stole second base. A two-out double to left center by Betances brought Flynn around to score (4-1). Betances scored on the next at-bat when junior third baseman Patrick Wallace (JR/Manorville, NY) singled down the left field line (5-1).

The play forced a Dolphin pitching change as Fortoso took the mound for CMSV.

The Purchase momentum continued to ignite as the Panthers batted in another two runs on a Jackson Hill (JR/Brooklyn, NY) 2-RBI single to right center field.

CMSV would make another pitching change before retiring the inning on a Greg Walsh (SR/Bethpage, NY) flyout to center field.

Both teams would go scoreless over the next two innings. The Mount chipped away at the Purchase lead with a pair of runs over the final two innings but could not close the gap, eventually falling to the hot-hitting Panthers 7-3.

Junior ace John Fitzgerald (JR/Wantagh, NY) (4-0) remains undefeated on the mound for Purchase after picking up the win in game two. He struck out five of the 15 batters he faced, allowing four hits and walking one over 4.0 innings of work.
