Purchase, NY
(Oct. 23, 2010) – Saturday was a long day for the Panthers: Three matches, five hours and 11 sets to be exact.
And by the end of it, the Panthers didn't have much to show for it in the win column.
Purchase finished its home finale by being swept in three matches while hosting a quad-match at the “Panther Pavilion.” The Panthers played well in all three, but came up short.
While every loss to a degree is tough, no match was more heartbreaking than the opener against conference foe Farmingdale State.
After a 25-14 blowout in the first set, Farmingdale came back to win two of the next three to force a fifth and deciding game. The Rams clipped past the Panthers 15-13 for the victory.
Last season's All-Skyline selection
Taylor Edelmann (SO/Bethel, CT) showed no hesitation in making up for some of the time she has missed this year.
Edelmann led the team with 23 kills in total for the day, just one more than standout transfer
Rebecca Dittler (JR/Elmira Heights, NY).
After a second consecutive Honor Roll mention this week, Dittler continued her stellar play. With her long arms and powerful spike at the net, Dittler had defenders flustered most of the afternoon.
St. Joseph's College-LI took the Panthers down in three straight sets in the following match, winning 25-21, 25-13 and 25-23.
The Golden Eagles struggled on offense, but made up for it on the defensive end. Purchase scored less than half of its points for the match on offense (26 offense, 31 defense).
The afternoon's final match ended with the defending Skyline champions NYU-POLY disposing of the Panthers in a three match sweep that took just 47 minutes to play.
Between last year's season MVP (Victoria Kalvert), championship game MVP (Meredith Shipman) and Rookie of the Year (Corey Loupee), the Fighting Blue Jays were just too much for Purchase to handle.
The Panthers (7-11; 3-6 Skyline) will look to bounce back next Wednesday (Oct. 27) when they visit SUNY College at Old Westbury in a conference duel.
