Macs, Panthers Tie 3-3

Yeshiva’s Late Goal Forces First of Two OTs

Purchase, NY (Oct. 7, 2010) – Purchase's Robert Acosta was all set to play the role of hero Thursday night, but his go-ahead goal with a little over six minutes left wouldn't be the last of the game.

Yeshiva netted the equalizer inside the final minute for a 3-3 tie – the same score following two additional, 10 minute overtime periods.

Yeshiva's Elezir Nuvakhov scored the game-tying goal with 55 seconds left off a header. Yaniv Lautman was credited with the assist.

Purchase (1-8-2, 0-4-1 Skyline Conference) battled back all night. The Panthers were down 1-0 in the first half after Daniel Benchimol scored off a Zachary Stern assist at 7:33.

Purchase tied the score on an unassisted goal off the foot of Sebastian Ribeiro (SR/Brooklyn, NY). His second goal of the season, which came just inside the penalty box, knotted the score at 1-1.

Sticking to the story line, the Maccabees (0-3-1, 0-1-1 Skyline), who were searching for their first win of the season, followed about 24 minutes later with another tying goal – this one off the foot of Lautman.

With the score tied 2-2, Acosta (SO/Queens, NY), who had entered the game on a nice substitution by head coach Ricardo Lyon-Trapp shortly before the goal, provided what appeared to be the game winner off a beautiful, breakaway assist from Ribero in the 83rd minute.

But Nuvakhov and the Maccabees would have the final say in regulation, tallying a header score in front of the goal with just under a minute left.

The Panthers, who played arguably their finest all around game of the season, had several opportunities throughout, especially in the first overtime.

However, they weren't able to capitalize. Both Nick Esposito (JR/Dover Plains, NY) and Ribero squandered late opportunities.

The highlight of the overtime had to be the sparkling save made by Purchase's goalkeeper David Kurzweil (SR/Bedford, NY) on a penalty kick in the second OT.

Yeshiva's Benchimol was given a clear shot at the goal on the PK, but Kurzweil nabbed the laser attempt to protect the tie score.

The game was marked by fouls and cautions, with Purchase receiving three yellow cards and Yeshiva one for the contest.

The Macs held the edge in shots (21-16) and corners (6-2), but both teams played fairly even in the matchup, one that included nine saves apiece for both starting keepers.
