Purchase, NY
(Sept. 11, 2010) – A tight defensive game Saturday afternoon on the turf at Purchase College between the hometown Panthers and visiting Brooklyn Bulldogs was riddled by penalties and cards, leaving officials, fans and players shaking their heads.
In the end, no team could manage a score, resulting in a frustrating double overtime draw that featured five goals that were called off.
The Panthers are still searching for their first win of the season, and are now 0-2-1, while Brooklyn is 1-0-1 after the 110 minute marathon.
On a hot and sunny day, the two teams battled, totaling 45 shots (BC 25, PC 20) that included several near misses – most notably a potential overtime game winner by Brooklyn that was waived off and an earlier shot on goal by Purchase's Daniel Grabowski-Clark (SR/Farmington, CT) late in the game that could have given the Panthers their first win of the season.
The goalkeepers stole the show. Purchase's
David Kurzweil (SR/Bedford, NY) continued his hot play by recording 15 saves, including a few highlight reel stops. Kurzweil has been one of the few bright spots for the Panthers to start 2010, taking the reigns as a leader and emerging as one of the star players in the conference at his position.
Brooklyn's Stamatis Boundouris was nearly as impressive, making nine saves between the pipes. He was at his best late in the game, especially overtime, where the Panther managed four shots in the first OT.
Purchase's offense squandered several opportunities, ringing up 11 shots in the second half, four more in the first OT before running out of gas in the final extra period.
The Bulldogs started hot, reeling off 13 of their 25 shots in the first half before cooling a bit as the Panthers defense tightened up down the stretch.
Grabowski-Clark recorded eight shots, including two shots on goal for Purchase, while Pajtim Gjonbalaj fired seven shots, including six on the goal for Brooklyn.
Many questioned the officiating for the game. Seven cautions were handed out and a total of 35 fouls were committed with Brooklyn edging Purchase 19-16 in that department.
The Bulldogs received two yellow cards and the Panthers earned three yellow cards, two of which resulted in reds and a pair of ejections.
The Panthers played the final six minutes two men down, holding off Brooklyn for the draw.
