Purchase, NY
(Dec. 9, 2011) – Purchase
head coach Peter Nestel couldn't help but be proud of his team in an impressive pre-holiday effort that capped the first half of the men's and women's swim schedule Friday night at home.
The Panthers put on a show in a three team, double dual meet with visiting Sarah Lawrence and Bard College, winning both ends of the matchup – in both men's and women's swimming. The Panthers, which have won two of three Skyline Conference championships over a three-year stretch on the women's side and have already excelled in just the second full varsity season for the men, dazzled in a terrific all-around effort throughout tonight.
The Panther women bested Bard 77-17 and also defeated Sarah Lawrence 66-28. The men topped Bard 79-15 and Sarah Lawrence 72-21.
Purchase won the 200-yard medley relay for starters, taking both in women's and men's action and kept rolling from there.
Patricia Fazzino (JR/Bayport, NY) captured a second-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle, while teammate
Joshua Nielson (SR/Saratoga Springs, NY) grabbed a first-place finish.
Purchase's
Christina Muller* (SR/Poughkeepsie, NY) championed the field in the 200 freestyle, an event that
August Cook (JR/Syracuse, NY) matched victory wise on the men's side.
Kamara Lewis (SO/Jamaica, NY) continued her impressive early-season ways, adding a victory in the 50 freestyle.
Jeffrey Suttera (FR/New Hartford, NY) joined Lewis as he touched first in his end of the same event.
By event nine, Purchase was in complete control and wouldn't relinquish its stranglehold on the win.
Alexandria Bodick (FR/New Canaan, CT) and Nielson grabbed first-place wins in the 200 IM, and Lewis added her second of the night in the 100 butterfly.
Mike Zeffiro (SR/Brant, NY) captured a first-place finish in the 100 butterfly, edging his teammate,
Seth Feingersh (SR/Bayside, NY).
Muller found herself in the winner's circle again – this time in the 100 freestyle.
Samir Mekrami (SO/Brooklyn, NY) also won the 100 freestyle as the Panthers continued their stretch of first-place finishes on both the men's and women's side. Mekrami would later collect another first-place win in the 500 freestyle.
Shortly later,
Bianca Covello (FR/Woodstock, NY) and Cook were tops in the 100 breaststroke. The Panthers put the finishing touches on the night in a women's relay win.
“It was a great performance from the team,” Nestel said. “Needless to say, I'm very pleased and excited about the second half.”
The Panthers will once again train in Puerto Rico during the holiday break. Purchase will then return to competition in 2012 when the Panthers host Brooklyn on Jan. 21, starting at 1 p.m.
