Jersey City, NJ (Sept. 10, 2011) – The silver lining for the women's soccer team Saturday at New Jersey City University came in the form of a goal that broke the home team's scoreless streak.
However, despite a breakthrough on the part of the Panthers, powerhouse NJCU was simply too much. The Gothic Knights defeated visiting Purchase 5-1 a day after flooding delayed the fight for NJCU Liberty Cup.
Senior striker Julia Caseres netted a goal and two assists – the 27th and 28th of her three-year Gothic Knight career to become the program's all-time leader in helpers – and five different NJCU players netted goals as the hometown rang up the victory in the weather-delayed final game of the tournament. The contest was played at an alternate home field, Cochrane Stadium at the Caven Point Sports Complex.
The Panther goal was scored by rookie forward Nathalie Lavelanet (FR/South Salem, NY) – her second of the year – with an assist by midfielder Ashley Panepinto (SR/North Rockland, NY). Also lost in the outcome was the tremendous effort of goalkeeper Kristen Racaniello (SO/Riverhead, NY), who made 10 saves in defeat.
NJCU remains perfect on the season, improving to 5-0-0 and the Knights open a season with five consecutive wins for only the second time in school history and the first time since starting the 2008 campaign at 6-0. The Knights owned a 28-4 advantage in shots, including 15-1 in the first half.
Purchase's lone goal came with 4:33 remaining in the second half, snapping NJCU's school-record, five-game, scoreless minutes streak at 450:49 – nearly 200 minutes more than the previous record of 268:30.
Caseres, the reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, broke the program's career assists mark of 26.
After several near strikes by the Knights in the first half, NJCU finally got on the board at 31:44 of the period. NJCU scored a pair of scintillating goals to end the first half with a 3-0 lead. The Gothic Knights extended the lead to 5-0 with two goals in a span of 2:13 early in the second period.
Purchase's goal came at the 85:27 mark after Panepinto pushed a thru ball on the ground from the right wing to allow Lavelanet in on a breakaway chance.
