Purchase, NY
(Sept. 20, 2011) – It was a “Blaise of Glory” Tuesday night for Purchase College's
Blaise Bourgeois as the sophomore forward scored four goals to lead men's soccer to a 7-1 win over visiting Sarah Lawrence.
“Blaise did a great job of finishing his chances, highlighting a very, very good all-around performance by our entire team,” said Purchase
head coach James Quiroga.
The match was scheduled to be played in Yonkers, but due to lighting issues, both teams and the referees quickly travelled back to Purchase. Despite the disruption in game plans, Purchase dominated the tilt from the opening whistle and got on the board when Panther freshmen
Stefan Gohler (FR/Brooklyn, NY) finished a pass from
Robert Acosta (JR/Queens, NY) in the 13th minute.
Bourgeois (SO/Rochester, NY) scored his first of four tallies 13 minutes later, taking a pass from
Adrian Vallejo (SR/Pleasantville, NY) and rain-bowing it over the keeper's head to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead.
It only took the Panther's leading scorer Bourgeois two minutes to score his second of the night, drawing the keeper out for an unassisted goal to give Purchase a three-goal cushion. Gohler scored his second of the match about five minutes later, at 10:45, on Acosta's second assist.
Sarah Lawrence pulled a goal back just before half on a Rodrigo Cuenza tally, but then the Panthers came out of halftime looking to restore the goal cushion and Bourgeois scored again, this time taking a Gohler feed for his third goal of the match just five minutes into the second half.
He scored his fourth of the match just seven minutes later when
Shomari Dias (SR/West Hempstead, NY) served a 40-yard ball over the top that Bourgeois finished nicely to make it 6-1. The Panthers then got its seventh and final goal when starting goalkeeper
David Kurzweil (SR/Bedford, NY), making his season debut in the field, scored off a perfect cross from Gohler, who had three assists on the evening.
Purchase outshot Sarah Lawrence, 26-8. Sarah Lawrence's keeper was kept busy on the night, making 14 saves. Kurzweil and newcomer keeper
Dylan Hyman (FR/San Francisco, CA) had to make just 8 saves.
“This was a very successful tune-up for us as we head into conference play this weekend,” coach Quiroga said.
The Panthers open Skyline Conference play Friday morning with a 10 a.m. match vs. Yeshiva at Tibbets Brook Park in Yonkers. Then on Saturday, the Panthers travel to Newburgh, NY to take on Mt. Saint Mary College.
