Newburgh, NY
(Sept. 24, 2011) – A day after crushing Yeshiva University, 9-0, Purchase fell 2-0 at Mount Saint Mary Saturday.
The Panthers (3-1-1) could not slow Sean Lockwood, who scored both goals in the victory. The Knights improved to 4-3-1 overall and moved to 2-0-0 in Skyline play. Lockwood opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, finishing off a nice play by junior Christian Redl. Moving forward on the left side, Redl beat a Purchase defender near the sideline and cut towards the box. From there, he served a cross to the far post, where Lockwood headed it back across the mouth of the goal.
Lockwood would add an insurance goal in the 65th minute, when his shot from 25 yards floated over the goalkeeper's head and underneath the crossbar.
The Panthers had their chances, too. In first half, Purchase had two great chances to score. At 17:50, standout rookie
Stefan Gohler (FR/Brooklyn, NY) chipped a shot and the ball was cleared off line. A minute later, Gohler struck from 35 yards out, but the MSMC goalie made great save. In second half, at 17:56,
Blaise Bourgeois (SO/Rochester, NY) took great a pass from
Shomari Dias (SR/West Hempstead, NY) and shot just wide from 10 yards out. Three minutes later, Dias struck from in close himself, but the ball went just wide.
“If we finished early, I am confident we would have grabbed some momentum," Purchase
head coach James Quiroga said. “It's a game of inches and today that certainly showed.”
While goals were hard to come by today, yesterday was a different story. On Friday morning, Purchase scored early and often, blanking the Macs in an impressive offensive effort. Gohler netted a hat trick with three goals; Bourgeois added two more to his team-leading total and fellow newcomer
Danny Moallem (SO/New Rochelle, NY) recorded a pair himself, including the game's first.
Abraham Pajares (SO/Port Chester, NY) also scored, capping the 9-0 effort with a late score (83:00). Gohler added an assist, while teammate
Noah Kellman (JR/Syracuse, NY) handed out a pair of assists in the win.
Both keepers
David Kurzweil (SR/Bedford, NY) and
Dylan Hyman (FR/San Francisco, CA) also had nice games in goal Friday against Yeshiva.
The Panthers will look to regroup Monday at Brooklyn.
