Purchase, NY
(Jan. 26, 2012) – The Purchase men's and women's swim teams overwhelmed visiting Brooklyn College Thursday night at home, sweeping both ends of a non-conference meet with the rival Bulldogs.
Although Purchase dominated in the final scores, the evening was very competitive, especially early with Brooklyn showing some tenacity in the pool. However, the visitors simply could not match the firepower of the Panthers, who cruised to a 107-85 win on the men's side and a 105-69 victory on the women's side. The women's final included exhibition scoring down the stretch as Purchase got back into the win column following the women's loss earlier in the week at SJC-LI.
This was the first meet for the men and the second for the women since the two teams returned from winter training in Puerto Rico.
The Panthers jumped out to an 11-4 lead after the first event – the 200 medley relay – on both sides, with the men and women starting start from the outset.
Allison Panzironi (FR/Pine Island, NY) took first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (13:52.49) and
Samir Mekrami (SO/Brooklyn, NY) (12:39.18) also captured a first-place finish for the Panthers. Purchase kept rolling early, leading into an event five win for
Christina Muller* (SR/Poughkeepsie, NY). Muller touched first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:20.83).
Super standout
August Cook (JR/Syracuse, NY) picked up right where he left off before the holiday break, shredding the field in the 200 free (2:00.64).
Jeffrey Sutera (FR/New Hartford, NY) toppled the competition in the 50 free and Mekrami added his second first-place finish in the 200 IM.
Kamara Lewis (SO/Jamaica, NY) and
Bianca Covello (FR/Woodstock, NY) matched the feats in the same respective races before Lewis captured yet another first in the 100 butterfly (1:10.79).
Brooklyn finally won a race in event 12 as Roman Vilnyanskiy edged the field in the 100 fly. Valentina Monroy would then take first in the 100 free as Brooklyn battled.
But the Panthers returned to form the rest of the way. Sutera won the 100 free and
Sydney Cohen* (SO/Oceanside, NY) defeated Amanda Martino in the 100 backstroke.
The Panthers finished with strong showings in the 500 freestyles and the final relays.
Purchase will now host Old Westbury Saturday at 2 p.m. on Senior Day. Four Panthers will be recognized in a pre-meet ceremony.
