Purchase, NY
(Sept. 17, 2012) – Nearly three hours after the 7 p.m. start, Purchase and Lehman had logged 110 minutes of soccer and the two programs couldn't decide a tiebreaker, with neither refusing to allow the game-winning score.
Defense and stellar play in goal marked a long evening of soccer on the turf Monday night. Two overtimes later, Purchase and Lehman played to a 1-1 draw. Men's soccer returned to the turf Monday night, two days after topping one CUNY rival, and flashed more of the same – this time, battling Lehman College before the home crowd.
The Panthers, who edged the City College of New York, 3-2, Saturday at Purchase, tied another CUNY foe tonight at home. Although Saturday's matchup was actually a “road game,” with CCNY acting as the home team in the tilt, the Panthers continued their strong play in Purchase. Monday's tough non-conference game was certainly aided by the support of the home crowd, who provided a much-needed spark in a tight, defensive contest.
In a back-and-forth showdown, both teams challenged each other in the first half. The programs have a long history, despite the different conferences, which dates back to their time together in the Hudson Valley Conference. Fueled by the rivalry, the visitors struck first on a score off the foot of Oumar Niang late in the first half. The goal was assisted by Geovanny Arredondo, and handed Lehman a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The Panthers responded with a tally of their own midway through the second, tying the score at 1-1 thanks to a nice goal by
Junior Sanguina (SO/White Plains, NY). The goal was assisted by
Andres Romero (JR/Port Chester, NY).
The final period played out with a number of yellow cards and fouls for both teams, but the extra session was needed as the game clock ticked down to 00:00. One 10-minute OT wouldn't be enough though as both clubs could not provide the go-ahead score.
Lehman (1-5-1) appeared to have the game won on a breakaway, but Panther netminder
Dylan Hyman (SO/San Francisco, CA) made a spectacular save, rejecting the blazing shot. Hyman popped up and yelled: “THIS IS MY GOAL … NOT IN MY GOAL!”
Once again energized by the defenses, Purchase and Lehman played to another stalemate. The final 10 minutes provided little action around the net and more tenacious play in the midfield.
Purchase outshot Lehman, 17-8, for the contest. The Panthers are now 2-2-1 overall.
