Brooklyn, NY
(Jan. 18, 2013) – Brooklyn and Purchase split Friday night's swim.
The Bulldogs and Panthers spent their evenings in the pool, with the Brooklyn men defeating visiting Purchase, 106-97, while the Purchase women were victorious, defeating Brooklyn, 112-76.
Purchase started strong on the women's side, besting the field in the 200-yard medley relay. Brooklyn did the same on the men's side and opened a lead after the 1,000-yard freestyle.
Brooklyn also performed well in the women's 1,000-yard freestyle, but the Panther women regrouped as
Mikaela Connors (FR/Grand Island, NY) (2:21.58) won the 200-yard freestyle and
Kamara Lewis (JR/Jamaica, NY) took first in the 50-yard freestyle (27.16).
Andrew Kaplan (FR/Cooperstown, NY) won the men's 200 free and
Samir Mekrami (JR/Brooklyn, NY) earned a win in the 50 free, keeping the Panthers, who have been dealing with some injuries and missing some swimmers of late, in the race early.
Michael Kastner (JR/Windsor, CT) would also win the 200 IM (2:30.08).
Shortly later,
Francesca Litz (JR/Liverpool, NY) dominated the 200 IM, winning the event in 2:26.77. Her teammate,
Bianca Covello (SO/Woodstock, NY), finished second. Lewis added her second first-place finish of the evening in the 100 butterfly.
Connors would do the same in the 100 free. She shined in a time of 1:03.65, garnering another nine points for the Panthers, as the visitors moved swiftly through event 15.
Kaplan took home another first-place finish himself in the 100-yard freestyle. He won the event in 56.83.
Standout newcomer
Haley Ryan (FR/East Hampton, NY), who finished second earlier in the evening in her first individual event, did one better this time around. She captured a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke.
Although Brooklyn's men picked it up a notch down the stretch and utilized Purchase's lack of depth with the injuries to accumulate some points in some events, Mekrami continued his standout night in the pool. He won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:58.42.
The Brooklyn men improve to 3-4 on the season while the women fall to 5-5. Purchase's women improved to 6-3, while the men fall to 3-6 in the non-conference matchup.
For the hosts, Emil Isaakov, the reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, once again impressed in the pool on the men's side. He won both the 100-Yard butterfly and the 100-Yard backstroke. His first-place times were 1:03.89 for the butterfly and 1:10.19 for the backstroke.
Brooklyn's Brian Clarke was also impressive, winning the 100-Yard breaststroke (1:16.74), while teammate Christopher Piechocki took first in the 1,000-Yard freestyle (12:10.80).
In the women's meet, BC's Valentina Monroy took first in the 1,000 Freestyle with a time of 13:09.05. Monroy swept the distance events with a first-place finish in the 500-Yard freestyle with a time of 6:18.76. Her teammate, Stephanie Caravello, captured a first-place finish in the 100-Yard breaststroke (1:32.14).
