Teaneck, NJ (Oct. 13, 2013) – Behind a hat trick from Enderson Mhilli and another shutout by goalkeeper Esteban Aguilar, Purchase reeled off its second straight win Sunday and its ninth in a row without defeat.
The Panthers toppled Yeshiva University 5-0 – their second consecutive shutout – downing the Maccabees at Fairleigh Dickinson University. The loss drops the Maccabees to 1-4-0 in Skyline Conference play and 1-6-0 overall.
Meanwhile, Purchase, in addition to its unbeaten streak, remains unbeaten in conference play at 4-0-1 and now 7-3-1 overall.
The visiting Panthers raced out to a 4-0 lead at halftime to establish a nice cushion through the first forty-five minutes of play.
Enderson Mhilli (SR/Rye, NY) netted three goals in the contest, including the first three of the game for a hat trick. He got Purchase on the board at 9:52 with the first goal of the game, before scoring again at 17:28 to make the score 2-0.
The fast Mhilli put another shot home at the 22:15 point of the opening half to put the Panthers up three.
A goal by Tim Rera at 35:36 made the score 4-0 before halftime. Rera and Junior Sanguina (JR/White Plains, NY) added two assists. Myles Clohessy (SO/Cornwall, CT) and Eli Wilson-Berkowitz (JR/Northampton, MA) also had assists in the victory.
In the second half, Purchase scored again when Zach Miller (JR/Saratoga, NY) hit the back of the net, closing the scoring at 5-0.
Purchase head coach James Bruno was pleased with the win and said afterward that he is also happy that many of his younger players saw time and that he was able spread the playing time around. He also signaled out Sanguina and Aguilar, two players which are having very special seasons.
Sanguina is making a strong case for league player of the year voting, especially in conference play, where he has been most outstanding against the teams that matter most. He is currently second in assists in conference play, as well as second in assists per game in the Skyline.
Not to be outdone, Aguilar has been a star in goal. He is currently first in the conference in saves, first in saves per game and is also best in goals against average and save percentage, not to mention ranking among the best in shutouts, posting back-to-back shutout wins, including a 1-0 final earlier in the week against CMSV.
As for the team, Purchase now has 13 points in the Skyline men's soccer standings, three points behind first-place Sage.
For the contest, Purchase held an 18-13 advantage in shots and 12-3 on corner kick attempts.
Purchase returns to action Wednesday at Sage.
