Garden City, NY (Oct. 24, 2013) – Purchase opened the swim season Thursday at Adelphi University, falling to the hosts 53-42 on the men's side and 61-33 on the women's side.
Adelphi women picked up eight individual wins, led by double winners Kate Harney and Heather Miller. Harney picked up wins in the 1,000 freestyle (12:42.20) and the 100 yard freestyle (59.47), while Miller was tops in the 50-yard freestyle (26.85) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.66).
On the women's side for Purchase, Kayla Holland (FR/Hempstead, NY) took second in the 100 freestyle and Haley Ryan (SO/East Hampton, NY) finished second in the 100 backstroke. Anna Krol (JR/Freeport, NY) added a second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke and Kamara Lewis (SR/Queens, NY) also contributed a second in the 50 freestyle. The Panther women also performed well in the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay.
The men's race was closer for Purchase as the Panthers were edged by Adelphi. The Purchase men won the 200 medley relay before Matthew Brower (FR/Staten Island, NY) captured a second-place finish in the 1,000. Dexter Brierley (JR/Brooklyn, NY) continued the strong start for Purchase with a first in the 50 freestyle. Sam Jaffe (FR/Silver Spring, MD) won the 200 IM and would later win the 100 breaststroke. Brower would also win the 100 backstroke as Jaffe, Brower and Brierley showed amazing speed in their first race of the season.
Meanwhile, the Adelphi men managed five individual first-place showings, getting two each from Gerry Theophilidis and Zachary Mazur. Theophilidis touched the wall first in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:02.39) and the 100-yard freestyle (51.01), while Mazur was first to the finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.89) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.49).
Purchase returns to action Saturday at the College of Mount Saint Vincent.
